Welcome to the Accademia Gallery, renowned for Michelangelo's David and one of Italy's most visited museums.
Founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, the museum originated from a hospital and a convent. It boasts the world's largest and most significant collection of gold-background paintings and houses the Museum of Musical Instruments, a passion of Grand Prince Ferdinando de'Medici.
Initially enriched with artworks from suppressed religious institutions by Pietro Leopoldo and Napoleon, the gallery's pivotal moment came in 1872. To preserve Michelangelo's David from deterioration in Piazza Signoria, it was transferred to the gallery. Transported on a complex wooden chariot through the city, the statue arrived on July 22, 1882, marking the museum's inauguration.
Besides David, the Accademia Gallery showcases many of Michelangelo's works, including the Prisoners and St. Matthew, earning it the nickname Michelangelo's Museum.
