The Huguang Guild Hall was built in the 24th year of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1759). It was a gathering place for businessmen from Hubei and Hunan in Chongqing. Together with the Guangdong Guild Hall and the Jiangnan Guild Hall, it formed a huge complex of ancient Huguang Guild Hall buildings in the Qing Dynasty. It is a historical evidence of Chongqing’s status as a prosperous commercial port and a mark of the era of the immigration movement from Huguang to Sichuan.
The guild hall covers an area of 8561 square meters. The Chongqing Huguang Guild Hall complex is the historical product of the "Huguang filled Sichuan" immigration wave. It was first built in the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and expanded successively during the Jiaqing, Daoguang and Guangxu periods. With a history of nearly 300 years, it is currently the largest complex of Qing Dynasty guild halls in the country.
Currently there are Guangdong Guild Hall, Jiangnan Guild Hall, Lianghu Guild Hall, Jiangxi Guild Hall and four theater buildings, including Guangdong Guild Hall and Qi'an Guild Hall. The relief carvings on the building of the guild hall are very exquisite, and their themes are mainly patterns of characters and stories such as Journey to the West, Romance of the West Chamber, Fengshen Bang and Twenty-Four Filial Piety, as well as pictures of dragons and phoenixes, animals and various exotic flowers and plants.
The case is a representative example of southern architectural art in China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Huguang Guild Hall is the largest and best-preserved ancient guild hall building complex in my country.
Chongqing Huguang Guild Hall not only preserves the material culture of the guild hall building, but also embodies the intangible culture of the immigrant spirit.
Since its opening, Chongqing Huguang Guild Hall has received more than 10 million tourists from home and abroad. It has become a business card of Chongqing city, a monument of Chinese immigrant culture, and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad.
