After a brief pause in Ollantaytambo for optional breakfast, we reach the hike's starting point at KM 82. Here, we finalize registration and team introductions before crossing the Rio Urubamba, signaling our adventure's onset.
The first day is a gentle introduction. After lunch at Miskay by a river, we delve into the history of the Llactapata archaeological site. The day concludes as we ascend to our campsite at Yuncachimpa, offering vistas of the mystic Nevado de Verónica.
Day 2: Yuncachimpa - Llulluchapampa - Warmihuañusca pass - Pacaymayu - Runkurakay pass - Chaquicocha
On the second day of our Machu Picchu Inca Trail Hike, participants can choose their own hiking pace, though we'll periodically regroup. Beginning our journey early, we traverse the Valley of Llulluchapampa, with the initial 3km characterized by steps winding through humid woodlands and by peaceful water features. From Llulluchapampa, a 2-3 hour hike awaits, leading to the highest point, the Warmihuañusca (Dead Woman Pass), at 4200m. This climb is notably the trail's most challenging section. Once at the summit, we'll pause for rest and enjoy the expansive views. Following this, a steep descent towards the Pacaymayu (Sunrise River) ensues. Our trail then passes through Runkurakay and concludes at our night's campsite, Chaquicocha. Here, everyone can relax, reflecting on the day's journey amidst breathtaking mountain views.
Day 3: Chaquicocha - Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna
On the third day of our Inca Trail journey to Machu Picchu, we delve into the scenic beauty of the changing ecosystem en route to the tropical forest of Wiñaywayna. Our journey commences by crossing two lakes at the second pass's crest. As we journey through captivating cloud forests and an Inca tunnel, the trail gently rises, eventually reaching the third pass, offering a stunning panorama of the Urubamba Valley. We'll then explore Phuyupatamarca, the "Town Above the Clouds", renowned for its meticulously crafted Inca baths that underscore Inca architectural prowess. Another Inca tunnel later, we'll immerse ourselves in the Wiñaywayna ruins. From there, Inca stairs evolve into a zigzagging pathway, guiding us to our final campsite, distinguished by its red-roofed white building. Here, amenities like hot water (available for 5 Soles) and bottled beverages are at hand.
Day 4: Wiñay Wayna - Machu Picchu – Cusco
On our Inca Trail's fourth and concluding day, we'll rise exceptionally early for a 4:30 am breakfast. With flashlights in hand, we head to the Inti Punku (Sun Gate), where Machu Picchu unfolds before us, illuminated by the day's first light. By around 8:00 am, we'll begin our descent to the Machu Picchu citadel. A guided tour, spanning approximately two hours, will unravel the historical significance of the site's various structures. Following the tour, a bus will whisk us away to Aguas Calientes, where you can indulge in the local hot springs (available for S10). Come afternoon, we depart from Aguas Calientes, embarking on our return journey to Cusco and drawing a close to our unforgettable Inca Trail expedition.
