Lake Biwa is an ancient lake and is home to over 2,000 species, including endemic species that cannot be found anywhere else. The Lake Biwa Museum exhibits the formation and history of the lake, the animals that inhabited the area, the history of the people around the lake, and the connection between modern people and the lake. In addition to three exhibition rooms covering geological history, human history, and the nature that interacts with our lives, the museum also houses one of Japan's largest freshwater aquariums, occupying approximately 2,000 square meters. The large tunnel tank in particular gives visitors the feeling of being at the bottom of the lake. The museum also has a room for 'exploration and discovery', equipped with a microscope, which provides an opportunity to observe and touch many biological, geological and cultural specimens.
